Sculpting Bodies in Pankow (installation)

Medium

Working Desk Installation with Multi-channel 4K Videos on Interactive Website

Inspired by the idea of psychogeography, this project aims to de-functionalize urban space, inviting its audience to drift around the Pankow public parks and streets and discover connections with public sculptures – bronze statues of women from GDR commissions.

How do we inhabit this historic, former East German neighborhood? In a series of seven videos, the researcher-artist reimagines ways of inhabiting the sites of sculptures and interacting with the everyday, mundane female bodies on display. While statues in public urban space tell a collective memory, the performance videos document examples of alternative collective memory by reconstructing a haptic one.

The videos, along with each sculpture’s location record pinned on a map, are presented on an interactive map. Viewers are invited to visit the website from the mobile device provided, by scanning the QR code, or by looking at the map print-out.
